Last year Volkswagen AG topped the market with sales of 1.55 million VW-brand cars across Europe. VW's volume compared with 902,900 for Ford, 825,000 for Opel and 801,600 for Renault, according to industry group ACEA.
Renault Chairman Stefan Mueller tells the online newspaper that new models and a focus on profit margins will enable it to reach its goal.
ANE notes that Opel also has vowed to reach second place in European car sales.
