Renault SA has joined the FIA's new Formula E electric race car series as a technical partner of Spark Racing Technology, the six-month-old company set up to supply cars for the competition.

Spark will provide four single-seat "Spark-Renault" cars each to 10 teams that are expected to participate in the inaugural 10-race series next year. Each team will grid two drivers for each race, all of which will be run on city streets.

Renault's function will be to optimize the cars' electric powertrains, which are being produced by U.K.-based McLaren Electronic Systems.

The 1,700-lb cars can accelerate to 100 kph in three seconds and run about 25 minutes per charge. Spark is developing the cars from a prototype produced by Formulec, the French EV racing company.
