Renault SA has unveiled a new $4,700 car called Kwid for emerging markets. Production of the mini-crossover will begin in India this summer, with sales commencing there in September.

Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn declares the Kwid a "game-changer" entry-level vehicle with such standard features as a 7-inch infotainment system display screen and Bluetooth wireless connectivity for mobile phones.

The A-segment hatchback's SUV-like design is reminiscent of Renault's Duster, a larger SUV introduced in 2010. The Kwid will share its Renault MF-A platform and powertrain with Nissan Motor Co.'s upcoming Datsun Redi Go.

Both models will be assembled at the Renault-Nissan alliance's small-car factory in Chennai. Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn says the Kwid will have 98% local content and, because of its low price, eventually be shipped to neighboring markets only.

The front-drive car will compete in India with such models as the Hyundai Eon and Maruti Alto. Renault revealed few technical details, but the car reportedly will be powered by a 3-cylinder, 800-cc gasoline engine it co-developed with Nissan. Additional engineering support came from India's Hinduja Tech Ltd. (formerly Defiance Technologies Ltd), in which Nissan holds a 38% stake.
