U.S. regulatory agencies have approved the sale of 2017 model diesels by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV. FCA applied for certification in May.
The clearance from the Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board covers the company’s 3.0-liter diesel, which is offered in the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV and Ram 1500 fullsize pickup truck.
The new software will have no impact on performance or fuel economy, according to the carmaker.
FCA hopes to use the same software to update diesels in 2014-2016 editions of the same two models. In January EPA and CARB accused the carmaker of fitting 104,000 of those engines in with unreported software that bypasses emission controls.
FCA denies any wrongdoing. Sources tell Reuters that approval to use the software in the older diesels may not come for several months.
