Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. says it will suspend work at its factories in India on Thursday, citing concern for worker safety. The company fears a one-day general strike in the region could trigger labor unrest at its facilities.
Maruti, which is India's largest carmaker, was forced to idle its assembly plant in Manesar for nearly a month last summer because of labor riots that resulted in the death of a manager.
The company's union says it has called off a demonstration planned for Thursday outside the company's factories. The regional labor action is part of a national strike called by Indian trade unions to protest rising inflation and the national government's economic policies.
