Carmakers have recalled a record 10.3 million vehicles in Japan since April compared with 9.5 million in all of fiscal 2014, according to Japan's Kyodo news service, which cites government data.
Campaigns to replace Takata Corp. airbag inflators that could explode account for two-thirds of this year's total. But the largest single recall this year involves 1.9 million Suzuki Motor Corp. vehicles with ignition switches that could catch fire.
Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism notes that the proliferation of parts-sharing among vehicles can increase the size of recalls.
