Honda Motor Co. has been blocked from marketing its top-selling CR-V crossover vehicle in China because officials have rejected the company’s plan to recall the model, The Nikkei reports.
Demand for the CR-V faltered at the end of last year when customers complained of gasoline fumes in the passenger compartment. Honda concedes the problem can occur if the vehicles are driven over repeated short trips in cold weather.
The company filed a recall plan at the end of February to fix the issue. But Chinese regulators have refused to accept the proposal. The Nikkei opines that a failed recall by Changan Automobile Group to remedy a similar problem may have made authorities more cautious.
In the meantime, the lack of an approved recall plan prevents Honda from delivering CR-Vs in China.
Honda’s overall sales in China grew by double digits in each of the past three years. But volume fell 13% in March, primarily because of the recall snag.
