PSA Peugeot Citroen says it will tease its future design direction for vehicles marketed in China when it unveils the Peugeot Exalt plug-in hybrid at the Beijing auto show this weekend.

The five-door hatchback, which sports a bare steel body and rear surfaces covered with a red "shark skin" material, was inspired by the Onyx concept PSA debuted at the Paris auto show in 2012.

The car's 340-hp powertrain consists of a 1.6-liter, 270-hp 4-cylinder gasoline engine and 6-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels and a 50 kW electric motor powering the rears.

The 3700-lb (1,700 kg) Exalt rides on the same platform that carries the Peugeot 308 small car PSA introduced last autumn.

PSA says the car's hand-formed body evokes French cars from the 1920s and 1930s. Inside, the upper door panels are covered with ebony wood panels created by Chinese artists.

One of the things that rarely gets the amount of attention that it should in a typical “car review” is the fact that for a considerable amount of time drivers are not “getting on the throttle” because for a considerable number of drivers, they’re “dwelling on the binders,” a.k.a., sitting with their foot depressed on the brakes, perhaps lifting every now and then in order to nudge forward in traffic.
