PSA Peugeot Citroen is phasing out the signature hydropneumatic suspension in its high-end Citroen C5 sedan, sources tell Reuters. The system has been a Citroen hallmark since the mid-1950s.

Reuter's sources say the move will help cut costs. They also point out that electronically controlled suspensions are cheaper and outperform Citroen's system, which uses a hydraulic pump and nitrogen-filled spheres.

Similar systems are being used by Rolls-Royce and high-end Audi and Mercedes-Benz cars.

PSA has been looking for ways to cut costs as it struggles to return to sustainable profitability. Reuters notes that PSA sold only about 10,000 C5s with hydropneumatic suspensions last year.
