Strong demand for its unusually styled C4 Cactus crossover vehicle has prompted PSA Peugeot Citroen to expand output and target sales outside Europe, Automotive News Europe reports.

Citroen CEO Linda Jackson tells the online newspaper the C-segment Cactus has already surpassed its 12-month sales target of 70,000 units by 4,000 units since the vehicle went on sale last June.

Citroen envisioned the Cactus as a European model only. But Jackson says the company now plans to hike annual production by 10,000 units and expand sales into Australia, South Africa and perhaps southeast Asia.

PSA said in April it would hike its overall output by 60,000 units through August to meet strong European demand. Jackson reiterates that PSA plans more iterations of the Cactus, including a production version of the Aircross concept it unveiled at the Shanghai auto show in April.
