PSA Peugeot-Citroen is planning a new midsize pickup truck that could be launched by 2018 in Europe, reports Autocar.
The U.K.-based enthusiast magazine, which doesn’t cite its sources, says the pickup truck could be announced on Tuesday as part of PSA’s new “Push to Pass” six-year growth plan. Autocar adds that PSA may partner with another carmaker on the project and suggests Toyota or Fiat as the most likely candidates.
PSA already works with the two carmakers on separate programs. The Citroen Dispatch and Peugeot Expert commercial vehicles share a platform with Toyota’s ProAce model. And the Citroen Jumper/Peugeot Boxer vans are twins of the Fiat Ducato.
A new Peugeot or Citroen midsize pickup would compete against the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi L200, Nissan Navara and Volkswagen Amarok. The last PSA pickup sold in Europe was the Peugeot 504 in the early 1990s.
The new truck likely will be built on a rear-wheel-drive, body-on-frame platform, other media reports suggest. The base engine is expected to be a 4-cylinder diesel.
