PSA Peugeot Citroen says its new three-cylinder engines are more powerful but 20% lighter and as much as 25% more fuel efficient than the four-cylinder powerplants they replace.

The base PureTech engine displaces 1.0 liter and makes 68 hp (50 kW). It emits 99 g/km of carbon dioxide and has an average fuel economy rating of nearly 66 mpg (4.3 l/100 km) on the European test cycle.

A 1.2-liter variant produces 82 hp (60 kW), emits 104 g/km of CO2 and has a fuel economy rating of 63 mpg (4.5 l/100 km). PSA says both engines are 8 hp (6 kW) more powerful than the respective 1.1- and 1.4-liter four-bangers they replace.

The architecture of the diminutive engines includes twin overhead cams with four valves per cylinder, an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head and integrated coolant system outlets and upper engine support.

The compact design and absence of a fourth cylinder reduces engine weight by 46-55 lbs (21-25 kg) compared to a four-cylinder architecture, according to PSA. The company says the PureTech engines also generate 30% less internal friction.

PSA says it filed 52 patents related to the architecture, engine control and production of the PureTech family.
