Malaysia’s largest carmaker, Proton Holdings Bhd, is recalling almost 95,000 vehicles in the country to replace oil cooler hoses that could degrade and leak.
The callback is the company’s largest ever, according to The Nikkei. The newspaper says the hoses were made with a material that degrades after about 40,000 km (25,000 miles) of use.
Affected vehicles include the Exora MPV, Preve midsize sedan and Suprima five-door hatch. Proton estimates the recall will last for six months and cost 2 million ringgit ($476,000).
Proton, which once commanded half the Malaysian market, controlled only 17% of sales last year. The company was acquired by Malaysian conglomerate DRB-Hicom Bhd in 2012 but continues to struggle with a reputation for poor quality and increasing competition from foreign brands.
