Protean Teams with Chinese Partner on In-Wheel Electric Motors
Protean Electric Inc. says it is forming a joint venture with China’s Zhejiang VIE Science & Technology Co. to produce in-wheel motors for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.

Protean Electric Inc. says it is forming a joint venture with China’s Zhejiang VIE Science & Technology Co. to produce in-wheel motors for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.
Protean says the in-wheel motor can be scaled for use in subcompact to fullsize cars and can generate as much as 590 lb-ft of torque. VIE, which already is one of Protean’s investors, will produce a version of the ProteanDrive electric motor for 16-inch wheels.
Protean claims to be the largest supplier of in-wheel electric motors in the world. The company has its own plant in Tianjin, China, and also has partnerships there with other Chinese companies.
Zhejiang-based VIE produces suspension systems, electronic control systems, pneumatic and hydraulic brake systems, clutch operating unit and engineered plastic parts.
