A European consortium is launching a three-year, $3 million project to show that the total cost of electric vehicle ownership can be less than that for conventional piston-powered cars.

The group includes Michelin, Siemens and Germany's Fraunhofer Institute and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The project is being funded by Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development.

The consortium will calculate operating costs as Michelin and Siemens employees use EVs to make 40-mile commutes between their facilities in France and Germany.

The group predicts that heavy use of the vehicles coupled with driver education, well-place recharging facilities and thoughtful operating strategies will prove more cost efficient than making the same trips with a gasoline-fueled car.
