BMW AG is recalling 176,000 vehicles worldwide to repair a defect that could cause the power brake system to fail.
The company says the campaign covers vehicles built during the 2012-2014 model years and equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine. Affected series include 1 Series small coupes, Z4 sports cars, 3 Series small sedans, 5 Series midsize sedans and X1 and X3 SUVs.
BMW says oil flow to the brake system's vacuum pump can be interrupted, causing a loss of power assist. Under those conditions, the driver must apply considerably more pressure to the brake pedal to stop the vehicle.
The company says most such failures have occurred within the first 1,000 miles of use.
