Toyota was poised to earn its first victory at Le Mans, but its leading TS050 Hybrid LMP1s stalled on the last lap with just three and a half minutes left in the race. This allowed the Porsche team—consisting of drivers Neel Jani, Marc Lieb and Romain Dumas—to race ahead to capture Porsche’s 18th win at the fabled French course.
Another Toyota TS050 finished second, followed by two Audi R18 cars. A second Porsche hybrid placed fifth. The various Toyota and Porsche entries traded the lead back and forth for most of the race.
Ford won the GTE Pro class with its GT supercar, marking the 50th anniversary of the carmaker’s one-two-three finish with the original GT. It was Ford’s first victory at Le Mans since 1980. Ferrari finished second in the class this year, ahead of another Ford GT.
