Porsche AG is preparing to replace the engines in all 785 of the $131,400 911 GT3 sports cars it has sold this year after two cars in Europe caught fire. The company reportedly is offering 911 Turbos as loaners.

Porsche has urged owners to stop driving their cars immediately until the engine is swapped. The recall cost has been estimated at more than $25 million.

In a letter to owners announcing the engine replacement program, the company blames the problem on a piston rod screw connection that can loosen, damage the crankcase and cause an oil fire.

The track-ready GT3's engine is a variant of the 3.8-liter flat-6 mill used in the 911 Carrera S, tuned to deliver 475 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The GT3 can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 196 mph.
