Following a pilot program last year, Porsche AG has begun offering augmented reality glasses to technicians at the company’s U.S. service centers.

The first three dealerships will receive glasses, dubbed Tech Look Live, this week. Another 75 dealership service centers will be added by year-end, and most of Porsche’s 189 U.S. dealers are expected to have the technology in 2019.

Porsche says the glasses can help reduce service times by 40%. Technicians can use the glasses, which are powered by Akron-based Atheer Inc.’s AiR Enterprise technology, to remotely access repair manuals with the information projected in front of them. They also can employ the devices to share data with other facilities and connect with Porsche's Atlanta-based support team.

In addition, mechanics can use the glasses as a high-resolution, auto-focus camera that can show minuscule details, such as the threads on a screw. An attached LED light can illuminate dark areas while a technician is working on a vehicle
