Volkswagen AG's Porsche unit is evaluating plans to add a $400,000-$500,000 mid-engine sports car to its lineup, CEO Matthias Mueller tells Germany's Handelsblatt.

Mueller says the car would be positioned between Porsche's iconic 911 sports car, which can cost between $49,000 and $245,000, and the $845,000 918 Spyder hybrid supercar due late next year.

If the project moves forward, Mueller says, a prototype of the new car would not be unveiled until at least 2015. Rumors suggest the car would be powered by a twin-turbocharged flat-six engine.

Mueller also tells Handelsblatt that the company's next-generation Panamera sedan due a few years from now will have a more coupe-like roofline. The styling change will "leave room" for Porsche to add a production version of the Sport Turismo wagon version of the Panamera revealed at the Paris auto show last month.
