Porsche AG has appointed Frank-Steffen Walliser to succeed August Achleitner as the head of the carmaker’s 911 and 718 (Boxster/Cayman) sports car programs, effective Jan. 1.

Walliser (right) currently is in charge of Porsche Motorsport and performance-based 911 GT Road Vehicles.

He will retain responsibilities for the latter, while Fritz Enzinger will succeed him at Porsche Motorsport. Walliser previously was the project manager for the hybrid-electric 918 Spyder hypercar.

Porsche says Achleitner (left) will transition to an unspecified “semi-retirement” role. Known as “Mr. 911,” the Austrian-born Achleitner, 63, joined Porsche in 1983 and took over the reins for the iconic sports car in 2001. He has overseen the launch of three generations of the 911, starting with the 997-model in 2004.

The latest 911, known internally as the 992, debuted this week at the Los Angeles auto show. While maintain the 911’s signature styling cues, the 2020 model gets a more powerful 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine and adds a host of available driver-assist technologies.
