Volvo Car Corp.’s Polestar electric-car brand plans to open 60 vehicle showrooms worldwide by 2020.
The so-called Polestar Space showrooms will be relatively small with a size limit of about 3,200 sq ft, company officials tell Automotive Management. The stand-alone facilities will be offered first to current Volvo dealers, with the first location expected to be announced soon.
Potential buyers can visit the sites to talk with brand experts—who will be paid a salary rather than a sales commission—and test drive vehicles. Purchases can be completed online, and vehicles will be delivered directly to an owner’s home.
Maintenance and repairs will be handled by nearby Volvo dealerships. But Polestar will offer a pickup and delivery service, so owners don’t have to visit the dealership themselves.
Production of the $155,000 Polestar 1 hybrid-powered sport coupe is due to start in mid-2019 at a new manufacturing plant in Chengdu, China. This will be followed by a pair of all-electric models: the Polestar 2 midsize sedan in 2019 and Polestar 3 large crossover/SUV thereafter.
The vehicles will be sold as two- or three-year subscriptions, which will bundle car payments, financing, insurance and maintenance costs into a single monthly fee. Sales are expected to begin next year in China, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the U.S.
