Jaguar Land Rover Ltd.’s Land Rover unit will launch plug-in hybrid versions of its Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs next year.
The hybrid Range Rovers will be powered by JLR's turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine teamed with an electric motor and 8-speed automatic transmission, Autocar reports. The combination is expected to generate nearly 500 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. A lithium-ion battery will provide an electric driving range of about 30 miles.
JLR developed the plug-in hybrid system internally and is expected to expand the system’s use to several Jaguar models in coming years. Land Rover currently offers a diesel-electric hybrid Range Rover, which teams a 3.0-liter V-6 oil burner with an electric motor to generate about 350 hp.
