Ford Motor Co. says its 2013 Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid can travel 21 miles in electric mode and another 599 miles using its gasoline engine.
The company brags that the plug-in system offers roughly twice the electric-only range and 80 miles more overall range than the Toyota Prius plug-in. Ford says the Energy model can hit 85 mph in electric mode, 23 mph greater than the Prius.
The Fusion Energi uses the same powertrain found in the standard Fusion Hybrid sedan and Ford C-Max Hybrid MPV. It consists of a 118-hp electric motor, lithium-ion battery and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 141 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque.
The $39,500 Energi model ($11,500 more than the standard Fusion Hybrid) has been given a combined city/highway rating of 100 mpg-equivalent by the Environmental Protection Agency. That compares with 98 mpg-e for the Chevrolet Volt and 95 mpg-e for the Prius plug-in.
