Infineon Technologies AG is working with scientists at Belgium’s IMEC research institute to develop 77- and 79-GHz CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) sensor chips for automotive radar applications.

Infineon will contribute its chip expertise with IMEC’s nanoelectronics knowhow related to high-frequency systems, circuits and antenna design. The companies plan to offer sample chips later this year and fully demonstrate the technology in 2017.

High-capacity CMOS chips promise to significantly improve on the accuracy and performance of current 24 GHz units. This will enable the use of multiple-input/multiple-output antennas that can more easily detect a wide-range of objects, including pedestrians and bikers, according to the partners.
