Baltimore, Md.-based Paice LLC has prompted a patent infringement investigation by the International Trade Commission into Ford Motor Co.’s use of hybrid powertrain technology, Automotive News reports.
Paice claims its patents are being illegally used in Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ hybrid vehicles that are assembled in Mexico and shipped to the U.S., thereby violating the 1930 Tariff Act. Ford says the claim is unsubstantiated.
The ITC filing is Paice’s latest gambit in a three-year patent infringement fight with Ford that so far has been rejected by three U.S. courts, AN notes.
Paice has vigorously defended its patents in earlier lawsuits against Hyundai-Kia, Toyota and Volkswagen. Those complaints have been settled. The developer is joined in the ITC complaint by Abell Foundation Inc., a charity that co-owns the patents.
