PSA Group’s Opel unit is developing 4-cylinder turbocharged engines that will be used by all the carmaker’s brands (Citroen, DS Automobiles, Opel, Peugeot and Vauxhall) in China, Europe and North America.

The next-generation engines are expected to be introduced in 2022. Opel will develop the powerplants at the engineering center in Russelsheim, Germany, it opened in late 2016 when Opel was part of General Motors Co.

The engines will be optimized for use in hybrid-electric systems. They will feature direct injection and variable valve controls to help improve efficiency and limit emissions.

The new powerplants will replace PSA’s current 1.6-liter 4-cylinder units. The carmaker says it will continue to offer its line of turbocharged PureTech 3-cylinder engines.

Russelsheim Engineering also is responsible PSA’s manual transmissions, alternative fuels, fuel cells, safety restraints, advanced driver assist-systems and the development of light commercial vehicle engines and platforms.
