General Motors Co.'s Opel unit plans to shorten working hours at its car plant in Eisenach, Germany, according to Agence France Presse. The move would reduce labor costs and trim excess inventories of the Corsa subcompact car built there.
The news service cites local labor chief Harald Lieske, who says the union has agreed to eliminate 10 days of production at the facility between September and year-end. Opel employs 1,800 workers in Eisenach.
Opel said on Thursday it would cut production schedules by 20 days at each of two other German plants: a car factory in Russelsheim and an engine facility in Kaiserslautern. The company states it doesn't plan to change production at its fourth German factory, an assembly plant in Bochum, which builds the popular Zafira MPV.
