General Motors Co.'s Adam Opel unit has introduced the first of three new engines that will replace the core of its current powertrain portfolio over the next 12 months.

The new 1.6-liter, direct-injection gasoline Ecotec mill will go into production at Opel's factory in Szentgotthardt, Hungary, late this year. The company says it will offer the engine in multiple power ratings in several unspecified model lines.

Opel says the engine, which is equipped with a turbocharger and automatic stop-start system, can make as much as 200 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. The powerplant is 13% more fuel efficient than the 1.6-liter engine it replaces, according to the company.
