PSA Group’s Opel unit says its new GT X Experimental concept vehicle includes several styling cues that will be incorporated into upcoming models.

The all-electric compact crossover is Opel’s first concept vehicle since PSA acquired the brand from General Motors Co. last August.

Opel expects SUV/crossovers will account for 40% of its lineup by 2024 and that all its vehicles will offer electrified powertrains by that time.

The new design language is described as “pure and bold” and will be teamed with “progressive” technology, according to Opel. It likens the approach to a “visual detox” that eliminates unnecessary design elements and features.

Highlights include smooth surfaces that minimize so-called cut lines on body panels and a new “Vizor” grille that resembles the eye slot of a motorcycle helmet. The GT X also sports a panoramic glass roof, thin roof pillars and bold yellow trim around the outer edge of the side windows and wheels.

The concept is built on a modular lightweight skateboard chassis that houses a 50-kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor that drives the front wheels. Opel says the vehicle is capable of Level 3 autonomous driving.
