General Motors Co.'s Adam Opel unit has introduced the first of three new engines over the next 12 months that will replace the core of its current powertrain portfolio.
The new 1.6-liter, direct-injection gasoline Ecotec engine will go into production at Opel's plant in Szentgotthardt, Hungary, late this year and be offered in multiple power ratings in several unspecified model lines.
Opel says the engine, equipped with a turbocharger and automatic stop-start system, can make as much as 200 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. The powerplant is 13% more fuel efficient than the 1.6-liter engine it replaces, according to the company.
