General Motors Co.’s Opel/Vauxhall Astra compact car has been named the 2016 European Car of the Year by a group of 58 journalists from 22 countries.
The all-new, 11th-generation Astra received 309 points in the voting, outpacing the Volvo XC90 crossover/SUV by 15 points. Other finalists included the Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster (202), Audi A4 compact car (189), Jaguar XE sedan (163), Skoda Superb sedan (147) and BMW 7 Series sedan (143).
Each judge had 25 points to award among the finalists, based on performance, design, safety, comfort, environmental characteristics and value. No vehicle could be awarded more than 10 points per judge.
