Volkswagen AG’s ultra-luxury Bugatti unit unveiled a one-off supercar this week at the Geneva auto show.

An unidentified buyer paid about $18.7 million for the vehicle (including $6.3 million in taxes), which is a record for a new car. The base Chiron starts at just under $3 million.

Dubbed La Voiture Noire (The Black Car), the pricey coupe is based on Bugatti’s Chiron and pays tribute to the 1930s-era Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic. Three of the four Atlantic models have survived, each of which has an estimated value of $50 million.

La Voiture features an aggressive front end with massive grille openings, long hood, deep front splitter and wraparound windshield. A dorsal seam runs up the center of the hood and over the roof, reminiscent of the Atlantic cars.

Power comes from the Chiron’s 8.0-liter W-16 engine. The quad-turbo powerplant generates 1,480 hp and 1,180 lb-ft of torque.
