A student team from Ohio State University has won this year’s phase of the EcoCar 3 competition, giving the university a sweep of the four-year program.

The competition, which is sponsored by the U.S. Dept. of Energy and General Motors Co., is designed to optimize the fuel efficiency of a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, while maintaining the car’s performance, safety and comfort.

Sixteen college teams in North America participated in the program. West Virginia University and University of Alabama teams finished second and third place, respectively.

Ohio State used a parallel plug-in hybrid architecture. The system consists of a 2.0-liter engine that can run on E85 fuel, a 5-speed automatic transmission, 150-kW electric motor and an 18.9-kWh battery.
