GM has called government ownership a "stigma." Chrysler hopes it has finally quashed suspicions that its "Halftime in America" Super Bowl commercial was really a bailout-inspired campaign ad for Obama. The companies hope memories of the dark days of 2009 are fading.

That isn't likely to happen anytime soon as the U.S. presidential campaign heats up.

Vice President Joe Biden told a New York City audience on Thursday that President Barack Obama's re-election theme is simple. He sums is up in a hypothetical bumper sticker: "Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive."

Obama's campaign is eager to remind voters of the success of his administration's rescue of GM and Chrysler. Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney has been outspoken in his criticism of the bailouts.
