NTN Corp. will supply in-vehicle motors to China’s Changchun FAWSN Auto Tech (FSAT) for an electric vehicle the startup plans to launch next year, The Nikkei reports.
NTN has been developing in-wheel electric motors since 2003. The company’s latest 30-kW units feature a parallel axial reduction gear and outer ring rotating hub that results in a lighter and more compact design. NTN says an offset motor shaft design allows the system to be mounted without affecting a vehicle’s suspension or steering geometry.
Several other companies also are developing in-wheel electric motors. Earlier this month Czech startup MW Motors announced plans to use the technology in the retro-styled Luka EV it aims to launch later this year.
