NTN Corp. will supply in-vehicle motors to China’s Changchun FAWSN Auto Tech (FSAT) for an electric vehicle the startup plans to launch next year, The Nikkei reports.

FSAT, which was formed last October as an offshoot of FAW Group, will unveil a prototype of the EV at next week’s Beijing auto show. The carmaker’s ambitious plans calls for annual sales of 300,000 EVs by 2023.

NTN has been developing in-wheel electric motors since 2003. The company’s latest 30-kW units feature a parallel axial reduction gear and outer ring rotating hub that results in a lighter and more compact design. NTN says an offset motor shaft design allows the system to be mounted without affecting a vehicle’s suspension or steering geometry.

Several other companies also are developing in-wheel electric motors. Earlier this month Czech startup MW Motors announced plans to use the technology in the retro-styled Luka EV it aims to launch later this year.
