Novelis Inc. has launched production at China's first plant dedicated to making heat-treated aluminum sheet for vehicles.

The $100 million facility in Changzhou has annual capacity to make 120,000 metric tons of automotive aluminum sheet. Output is intended to be used for doors, fenders, hoods and liftgates.

Novelis notes that carmakers everywhere are using more aluminum to boost fuel efficiency by reducing vehicle weight. The company aims to triple its global capacity to make aluminum automotive sheet to 900,000 metric tons by 2015 compared with 2011.
