Norwegians bought more than 600 Tesla Model S electric sedans last month, making the car the country's top-selling passenger vehicle, according to OFV, an Oslo-based roadway special interest group.

Overall car sales in the country rose 9% to 12,200 units in September. Demand for the Model S, which costs more than €81,000 in Norway (compared with €51,500 in the U.S.), pushed the Volkswagen Golf into second place with 560 sales.

The Model S went on sale in Europe two months ago. Reuters says some shoppers in Norway are offering nearly €15,000 extra to buy one of the high-performance EVs from an existing owner.

Still, that price is a relative bargain in the country, whose high taxes make all cars expensive. Reuters says a piston-powered car with performance similar to the Model S would cost about €147,500 in Norway.

The Model S can sprint from zero to 100 kph in 5.4 seconds, reach a top speed of 200 kph and travel 480 km on a single charge.
