Purists prefer the relatively primitive setup because it's far easier than an independent rear suspension to jack up for larger tires and extra ground clearance. AN says all other Jeep SUVs now ride on suspensions with the more sophisticated architecture.
The heavier live axle dictates countermeasures to improve fuel efficiency. The next Wrangler will be smaller, come with an aluminum body and sport a more raked windshield for improved aerodynamics, according to AN.
The newspaper says the new model will be powered by a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in place of the current naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V-6. Output will be delivered through an 8-speed automatic transmission.
