Nissan Motor Co. CEO Hiroto Saikawa told employees yesterday that ousted Chairman Carlos Ghosn had amassed too much power.

Last week Saikawa revealed that for months Nissan had been investigating Ghosn, who was arrested a week ago, on suspicion of financial misconduct. Nissan’s board voted to remove Ghosn as chairman on Nov. 22.

Saikawa’s comments were broadcast live on Monday to Nissan offices across Japan. Those who viewed the speech tell Automotive News Europe that Saikawa described the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance as “unbalanced” and complained that Nissan’s image had been subjugated by Ghosn’s own persona.

Prior to his arrest, Ghosn had been chairman of all three alliance members and the alliance itself. He continues as chairman and CEO of Renault SA pending details from Nissan about his alleged financial wrongdoing. He has not been charged with any crimes.

Ghosn also continues as chairman of the alliance. Saikawa is the partnership’s vice chairman.
