Nissan Motor Co. is preparing to recall 515,400 Versa small cars in the U.S. to replace Takata-supplied driver’s frontal airbag inflators that could explode in a crash.
The callback, scheduled to begin in September, targets 2007-2012 model Versa sedans and hatchbacks that use Takata “PSDI-5” Takata inflators.
The devices in the sedans don’t contain a drying agent later introduced by Takata to combat deterioration caused by exposure to heat and humidity. Inflators used in the recalled hatchbacks use a calcium sulfate desiccant.
Earlier this month the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ordered Takata to recall 2.7 million inflators that use calcium sulfate on suspicion that it too will fail. Nissan says newer Takata inflators that use a second-generation drying agent are not being recalled.
