Nissan Motor Co. is preparing a U.S. recall for 79,900 of its 2013-2014 model Pathfinder SUVs to fix a switch that could leave the brake lights illuminated when the driver isn’t trying to stop the vehicle.

The problem, which is blamed on an assembly error, also could interfere with the brake-shift interlock system. The interlock is a safety feature designed to prevent the driver from shifting the transmission from Park to Drive unless the brake pedal is depressed.

Nissan plans to begin the recall on July 25. Dealers will reinstall the switch and replace the stop lamp relay.
