Nissan Motor Co. says it will finally begin recalling 870,000 of its 2013-2015 model Altima sedans in the U.S. and Canada to replace a balky secondary hood latch.
Last March the company expanded plans to fix the problem by adding 2014 and 2015 models to a previously announced recall for 2013 model Altimas. But it told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at the time it didn’t yet know how to fix the defect.
The secondary latch is designed to prevent the hood from flying open if the main latch isn’t fully secured. Nissan says affected devices can corrode and stick in the “open” position. Dealers will replace the mechanism with a unit protected by a better rust preventative.
Last January Nissan also began repairing secondary hood latches in 216,000 of its 2013-2014 model Pathfinder SUVs and 2013-2014 Infiniti JX35/QX60 large crossover in the U.S.
