Nissan Motor Co. says it will repair sensors in about 3.5 million of its vehicles because the devices may fail to activate the passenger-side airbags when they should. About 90% of the affected models are in the U.S.
In most cases, dealers will update control software. In some instances, they will replace the sensor, which is intended to disable the passenger-side airbags if the seat is empty or occupied by a child. Nissan says the lamp intended to indicate whether the airbag has been deactivated also may not work properly.
Affected models are:
- 2013-2016 Nissan Altima midsize sedans, Leaf electric sedans, Sentra small sedans and NV200 vans
- 2013-2016 Infiniti JX35/QX60 large crossovers
- 2013-2017 Nissan Pathfinder SUVs
- 2014-2016 Nissan NV taxis
- 2014-2016 Infiniti Q50 sport sedans
- 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue small crossovers
- 2015-2016 Nissan Murano sporty crossovers
- 2015-2016 Chevrolet City Express vans
- 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima large sedans
Reuters says Nissan has conducted three previous recalls in the past three years to fix the same problem.
