Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and new parent Nissan Motor Co. are looking at additional ways to collaborate, including sharing future SUVs and hybrid-electric technology.
The companies have been evaluating potential joint projects since Nissan acquired a controlling 34% share in Mitsubishi last autumn. At that time the partners said they would co-develop an MPV for Asia.
Other joint development programs are expected to be identified by the end of March, Mitsubishi Chief Operating Officer Trevor Mann tells Motoring. They could include the next-generation Nissan Armada and Mitsubishi Pajero fullsize SUVs, Mann says, noting that both vehicles are due to be updated soon.
The Pajero hasn't had a full redesign for about 17 years, and the Armada (sold as the Patrol outside of the U.S.) hasn’t been overhauled since 2010. Any next-generation versions of the vehicles likely will include a hybrid-electric variant, Mann notes.
