Nissan Motor Co. is taking steps to reduce its vehicle production in North America by 10%- 20% this summer because of softening sales, The Nikkei reports.
Nissan will slow rather than halt production lines and does not expect to impose layoffs, according to the Tokyo-based newspaper. It says the carmaker has notified suppliers about the cutbacks, which are expected to end this autumn.
The report says Nissan has already told workers not to report for 1-2 days per week at two assembly plants in the U.S. and three in Mexico.
Nissan’s retail sales in the U.S. last year rose 2% in an overall market that shrank 2%, according to Autodata Corp.. But the company’s volume stalled in the first quarter of 2018 as the overall market expanded 2%.
