Nissan Motor Corp. is broadening a recall of its Altima sedans in the U.S. and Canada from 238,000 units to more than 878,000 to fix a secondary hood latch that may not work.
The latch's function is to prevent the hood from flying open if the main latch isn't secured. The original recall last October targeted 2013 model Altimas. The expanded campaign adds 2014 and 2015 models produced before the end of 2014.
Nissan tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration it hasn't identified the cause of the problem or how to fix it. It adds the recall could be broadened depending upon results of its continuing investigation.
In January Nissan announced recalls to fix the same problem in secondary hood latches in 216,000 of its 2013-2014 Pathfinder SUVs and 2013-2014 Infiniti JX35/QX60 large crossovers. It isn't clear if the same mechanism is involved in both campaigns.
