Nissan Motor Co. has developed a system to prevent unintended acceleration when a driver presses the accelerator rather than the brake pedal during slow-speed parking maneuvers.

The technology extends Nissan's Around View Monitor, which employs sonar and four external cameras to detect nearby obstacles.

The system uses the sensors to determine if the vehicle is in a parking space or approaching a wall. If so, it automatically controls acceleration and applies the brakes if necessary to avoid a collision.

Nissan says the technology, which it calls an "emergency assist for pedal misapplication," will debut in Asia later this year in the company's Elgrand MPV. Nissan has frequently used the minivan to introduce its most advanced electronic safety features.
