U.S. safety regulators have intensified an investigation into complaints that floor mats in Ford Motor Co.'s Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKZ and Mercury Milan sedans could jam the accelerator pedal.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports 52 vehicle owner complaints about accelerators sticking.
The agency began its analysis in 2010. The probe covers about 480,000 cars made during the 2008-2010 model years.
Upgrading the investigation's status to an engineering analysis status often signals an impending recall. Ford says it is "disappointed" in the agency's action because the probe concerns only incidents involving improperly installed, double-stacked or unsecured floor mats.
