The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into complaints that the driver's right foot can be trapped by a trim panel in the footwell of Nissan Versa small cars.
The initial investigation targets some 360,000 Versa and Versa Note models built in the 2013-2015 model years.
At issue is a plastic center-tunnel trim panel that drivers say can catch on the edge of their shoe as it rests on the accelerator. Some complaints say the car's HVAC relay actuator also intrudes into the toe area above the accelerator pedal.
NHTSA reports 24 complaints and one injury-causing crash blamed on the obstructions, which can hamper the driver's ability to quickly switch from the accelerator to brake pedal.
